The author studied Medicine in the early sixties. When rock climbing in Northumberland he found a raven chick. He hand-reared ‘Snibo’ to adulthood. All these years later, Snibo takes flight again, as a significant character in Anroth the Druid. All of the other characters in the novel are fictional. In real life, Snibo was a very friendly bird. In ‘Anroth the Druid’, he is more sinister. After qualifying the author worked as a ship’s doctor, on a rusty old cargo ship, built during the second world war, eventually going right round the world. It stimulated his interest in how, many centuries ago, societies used to cope, without hospitals and healthcare services. Later, as a consultant gynaecologist he used a high powered operating microscope, operating on infertile women, with damaged Fallopian tubes. After retiring, he ran an Angling Association, in Northumbria, near the Scottish border. The beauty of his surroundings, and isolation, influenced much of the background writing of Anroth the Druid.
