Mari Yamaguchi is a first-generation Japanese American author passionate about promoting diversity and representation in children's literature. Born in Japan and raised in the United States, Mari developed a keen interest in how racial and ethnic diversity shapes American society and history. This curiosity led her to major in Afro-American Studies at Smith College, where she actively worked to bridge gaps between student communities of different races and ethnicities. After earning her MBA from Stanford University, Mari spent several years in the San Francisco Bay Area, experiencing life in a region where Asian Americans form a significant part of the population. Her return to the East Coast highlighted the stark differences in how Asian Americans are perceived across the country, fueling her dedication to changing these perceptions. As a mother raising a biracial child in Brooklyn, Mari became acutely aware of the challenges faced by Asian parents raising children in a predominantly white society. Her interactions with other Asian American parents have deepened her understanding of the importance of representation and role models for children of color. Mari's writing is driven by her belief that showcasing inspiring figures can motivate children and contribute to greater societal harmony. Through her work, she aims to instill pride in heritage and hope for the future in young readers, especially those from Asian American backgrounds. When not writing, Mari enjoys exploring the vibrant cultural scene of New York City with her teenage daughter, embracing the latter’s rich Japanese and Italian heritage.
