Lise Funderburg grew up in a mixed family in a mixed neighborhood in the decidedly unmixed city of Philadelphia, PA. She studied at Reed College and The Columbia University School of Journalism, before launching a career as an author, journalist, essayist, editor, and writing teacher. A freelancer, in other words, with only occasional dips into full-time employ, much to the chagrin of her father. Lise's newest book is "Apple, Tree: Writers on Their Parents" (Sept. 1, 2019, University of Nebraska Press). For this collection of all-original essays, Lise asked 25 writers to make meaning out of those moments we realize we've turned into one of our parents. Lyrical, funny, poignant, heartbreaking, wise—it’s all here. Her last book was the memoir/social history, "Pig Candy: Taking My Father South, Taking My Father Home" (Free Press), a contemplation of life, death, and barbecue. Her first book was a collection of oral histories, "Black, White, Other: Biracial Americans Talk about Race and Identity," the first to explore the lives of adult children of black-white unions. She has been a regular contributor to O, the Oprah Magazine and Garden Design and has written a book about the Tony-winning musical "The Color Purple." Articles, essays and reviews have appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Philadelphia Inquirer, The Nation, Salon, National Geographic, More, and other publications. Lise is the recipient of fellowships from the Civitella Ranieri Foundation and the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts. She has twice been selected as the writer-in-residence at The James Thurber House in Columbus, Ohio, and has received grants from the Dick Goldensohn Fund for Journalists, The Leeway Foundation, and the Puffin Foundation. Lise has been awarded residencies at The Blue Mountain Center and the MacDowell Colony. She teaches creative writing at the University of Pennsylvania and The Paris Writers Workshop and lives in Philadelphia.
