Rt Hon Liam Byrne MP is a member of His Majesty’s Privy Council and Chair of the House of Commons Business & Trade Committee. He has served at the heart of British government during moments of upheaval and reform. In the last Labour government, he led the largest post-war transformation of Britain’s immigration system, before being appointed Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster during the Global Financial Crisis, where he coordinated the work of No.10 for Prime Minister Gordon Brown. He later served as Chief Secretary to the Treasury where he negotiated the UK’s fiscal consolidation plan. From 2019 to 2025, he chaired the Global Parliamentary Network on the World Bank and IMF. Alongside his parliamentary career, Liam is an Honorary Professor of Social Sciences at the University of Birmingham. He graduated top of his year at the University of Manchester, winning the Robert McKenzie Prize for Political Science, before becoming a Fulbright Scholar at Harvard Business School. He has held research and parliamentary fellowships at Nuffield College and St Antony’s College, Oxford. He has lectured at Harvard, Oxford, the LSE and Saïd Business School, and his writing has appeared in the Financial Times, Newsweek, The Guardian, The Times, Prospect, the New Statesman and the Daily Mirror.
