Trained as a neuroscientist and literary scholar, Laura Otis studies the ways that literature and science intersect. She is a Professor of English Emerita at Emory University and a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Her research has been supported by MacArthur and Guggenheim Fellowships, and she blogs on literary and scientific creativity for the journal Psychology Today. Otis holds a BS in Biochemistry, an MA in Neuroscience, a PhD in Comparative Literature, and an MFA in Fiction. Her book, Rethinking Thought, explores the ways that creative people use words and images in their thinking. Her latest book, Banned Emotions, examines how metaphors for unloved emotions such as self-pity can influence people's inner lives. Besides her academic books, Otis has written six novels, including Clean, about a housekeeper who uncovers a human trafficking ring, and Refiner's Fire, about a single mother struggling to survive as a classical singer in Berlin.
