Kim Hunt’s debut crime novel, The Beautiful Dead, introduced her kick-ass, can-do protagonist, park ranger Cal Nyx. It was released in 2020 by Bloodhound Books UK and was shortlisted for Best First Novel in the 2021 Ngaio Marsh Awards. Her second-in-series Cal Nyx mystery, The Quarry, was published under the Spiral Collectives imprint in mid-2023. It has just been longlisted for the 2024 Ngaio Marsh Awards for Best Novel. Kim was named runner-up in the US-based Sisters in Crime 2023 Pride Awards for Emerging LGBTQIA+ Crime Writers. A third Cal Nyx novel, The Freezer, is due for publication in late 2024. A standalone novel set in NZ, The Corrector, will be published in early 2025. Proudly working-class, Kim spent the 1990s as a floor and wall tiler in Sydney while studying as a mature-age undergrad student. She’s also worked as a band roadie, a women’s refuge worker and a gardener in both Australia and Aotearoa (New Zealand), where she was born. She’s lived in gritty urban environments and outside under corro in the Australian bush. She’s also done a lot of cross-country road miles despite a period of being nailed down to complete a Master of Letters at the University of Sydney. Kim currently lives and writes in Aotearoa, NZ.
