My name was Judeth Emordi. I became Fenton when I married an Englishman in 1979. My mother chose the name Jude for me as she was certain she was having a boy. So I was called Judith with an 'e', Judeth. I was born in Lagos. We left Nigeria when I was three years old to live in New York. As a family, I am the oldest of four children. Our mother brought us up alone, at times working two or three jobs at a time. She was to become my role model. Even now in her mid-80s she is always busy. When I was 10 years old we moved to the UK. That was when I really began to form the person I am now. I have always loved reading. It has been my main pleasure. Looking at books in the library, I wondered about seeing a book I've written on one of those shelves. Books on England fascinated me. I remember standing by Plymouth Rock in New England. I looked across the water and wondered about the Plymouth in the old country over the water. I forgot about that until 14 years later I stood at the Mayflower Steps at the Barbican in Plymouth, UK. I stood there looking across and the memory of myself standing on the opposite shore hit me. It was a defining moment.
