Dr. John Hillen The Honorable Dr. John Hillen is the Executive in Residence and Professor of Practice in the School of Business at George Mason University, where he teaches strategy and leadership. The winner of several leadership awards in the military and in business, he also moderates leadership seminars for The Aspen Institute. He writes a monthly column on leadership and strategy issues for Washington Technology magazine. His book, "What Happens Now? Reinvent Yourself As A Leader Before Your Business Outruns You" is scheduled to be published by Select Books in May 2018. A former public company CEO and an experienced Director, Hillen has served on the boards of over ten technology services firms, both public and privately held. He is also an experienced Director and Trustee in a number of consequential non-profit/educational institutions, and has developed a deep experience in strategy and governance best practices across a range of enterprises as a result. As a strategist in these board roles or as a strategic consultant, he has helped dozen of companies and numerous non-profits or charities to develop strategic plans. Hillen is a leading American public policy intellectual, decorated combat veteran, and business leader in the national security community. A former Assistant Secretary of State and CEO of several companies, he currently sits on the fiduciary Boards of five companies and chairs the advisory board of one other. He was recently named to the Washington 100, a list of the 100 most influential business leaders in the DC area. Prior to teaching in the School of Business at George Mason, he was the President and Chief Executive Officer of Sotera Defense Solutions, Inc. (Sotera), formerly Global Defense Technology & Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:GTEC), and a member of its Board of Directors from 2008-2013. Hillen took the company public in 2009 and the company’s IPO won the ACG National Chapter “Deal of the Year” award. Sotera was named the Company of the Year in 2012 in the GovCon Awards large business category. Dr. Hillen was a “Fed 100” winner in 2011 and 2017. Dr. Hillen is the former COO of Island ECN, a capital markets trading firm in New York City that was sold to Reuters for over $500M in 2002. He was also the head of the defense and intelligence group of American Management Systems and was the first President of what is now CGI Federal, in 2005. He previously worked at SRA International. Prior to his business career, Dr. Hillen worked as a military policy expert and also served for twelve years as an Army officer. He is the author or editor of several books on international security and has been published in dozens of leading journals and newspapers including the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal. He recently served for nine years on the Chief of Naval Operations Executive Panel, the federal advisory committee supporting the head of the US Navy. He was awarded the Navy’s Meritorious Public Service medal in 2017. Dr. Hillen graduated from Duke University, holds a Master’s Degree from King’s College London, a doctorate from Oxford, and received his MBA from the Johnson School of Management at Cornell.
