Joan Didion wrote an essay called “Why I Write.” Instead of explaining why I write (not today, anyway), I’d like to start with where I write. Most days, I’m in the living room, either at my desk or on a couch that faces three large bookcases. A friend of mine’s house burned down. After that, she adopted a one-in, one-out policy to keep from growing too attached to her books. For every new one she buys, she gives one away. I live in a house that’s too small for a lot of bookcases, so I mostly follow my friend’s practice. This leaves me feeling attached to the books I do keep, like George Eliot’s *Middlemarch,* E.B. White’s essays, and *Conundrum* by Jan Morris. I’ve begun giving away books about the Vietnam War that I read while writing *Finding Pete: Rediscovering the Brother I Lost in Vietnam.* Writing the book was cathartic and I solved the mystery I set out to explore, so I’m keeping a few copies of my published book and letting the others go. My second book—*For Want of Wings: A Bird with Teeth and a Dinosaur in the Family*—came out in February 2022. It’s a hybrid memoir about my great-grandfather discovering a fossil that links reptiles and birds, and my trips to the desolate canyon where he found it. My research took me from California to Connecticut to Kansas. The book is the most personal thing I’ve written. I used to write about food and wine, and while many people are passionate about these subjects, writing about them isn’t necessarily personal. Who would think that dinosaurs, Puritans, an abolitionist, and the American West of the late 1800s could be so personal? I hope you will buy the book, read it, and find something that resonates with you. And if you do, thank you! Jill
