I was born and grew up in Atlanta, Ga. where my Dad's family had lived since the 1850s. attended the Univ of Michigan in 1960-1963, theUniv of Chicago Law School 1964-1967 and practiced law in Chicago from 1967 t0 2002. I was one of the founders of the Peoples' Law Office (PLO) in 1969, starting our law collective in a former sausage shop on Halsted Street in not yet gentrified Lincoln Park. Our clients included the Black Panther Party, the Young Lords, the Young Patriots, SDS, and the antiwar movement. My first Movement case was representing 12 SDS protesters on the first day of the Conspiracy 7 trial in September 1969, while Fred Hampton was speaking outside the Federal courthouse. Three months later Fred was murdered in his bed at 4 am by Chicago Police. Our office represented the families of Fred Hampton and Mark Clark, and the raid survivors in a civil suit for the next 13 years including an 18 month trial where my law partner Flint Taylor and I with help from attorney Jim Montgomery established that Fred's assassination was orchestrated by the FBI as part of their Cointelpro Program in conspiracy with the Chicago Police and States Attorney Hanrahan's office. I was part pf PLO's work defending the Attica Brothers, the Pontiac (Prison) Brothers (16 Not guilty jury findings when all were charged with death penalty) and the lawsuits against Police Commander and torturer Jon Burge, which led to the firing and incarceration of Burge, the overturning of numerous convictions based on tortured confessions, hundred of millions of dollars in damages for Burge's torture victims. In addition, the City of Chicago was forced to pay reparation to the families of victims, the story of Burge's torture, sanctioned by the City's politicians, is taught in the high schools and a memorial to the victims is being constructed. More recently, I had the privilege of representing Water Protectors at Standing Rock and have done work supporting human and equal rights for Palestinians. I currently live in New Mexico with my wife Mariel Nanasi. My children Roger, Andrew, Justin, and Rosa live in Tampa, California, D.C. and Philadelphia. Moving out west in 2001 has made me much more aware of the physical environment and the disastrous effects of climate change. This week in New Mexico we are experiencing the smoke from forest fires, a heat wave, and a long term drought. MY wife Mariel Nanasi is the ED of New Energy Economy and is fighting the utility monopoly and the fossil fuel interests, which have dominated the legislature and politics in New Mexico. I wrote the "Assassination of Fred Hampton," as a memoir, describing the events as I experienced and participated in them and with the inspiration of Fred Hampton's life and words:"Dare to struggle, dare to win. If you don't struggle you don't deserve to win. Peace to you if you are willing to fight for it." I am happy to do virtual presentations to classes and have a powerpoint that I can share.
