Some years ago, when my husband and I announced we were moving to a new city -- our sixth move in ten years -- my mother put her hands on her hips and said, only half in jest, "Can't one of you hold a job?" It wasn't really a problem. We were both journalists, and we kept getting hired for better and better jobs, meaning we moved a lot. It's actually a good way to avoid having to do heavy clean-outs of closets, basements, and those cabinets under the kitchen sink. Several years ago, after a journalism career that led me across country and into stories that won lots of awards -- a Robert F. Kennedy Award, a Polk Award, a Raymond F. Clapper Award, and eight Pulitzer nominations -- I've settled in Chicago, a city with which I've had a life-long love affair. Deuce Mora, the protagonist of THE SOMEDAY FILE and several more novels to come, is part me and all Chicago. She is getting a great reception. Kirkus Reviews: "Heller pulls off a neat stunt, tying together all the different crimes ... in a compelling package that actually adds up. A promising first adventure; if Heller can keep the quality this high, mystery fans will have a lot to look forward to." Publishers Weekly: "The story line is nicely twisty without stretching probability." In THE SOMEDAY FILE, three crimes spanning six decades collide on the life of Chicago journalist Deuce Mora and put her in the cross-hairs against the Mob, Chicago's political apparatus, and her own editor. What started as a simple search for a column in a seedy bar in Cicero sets her off on an investigation that could cost her job -- and her life. I offer Deuce with my fondest wish that you like her as much as I do.
