Jack Fitzgerald, the author of "Hackett at Large", recently sat down for a year end interview to talk about his book and about himself: Interviewer: So, Mr. Fitzgerald, here we are at the end of another literary year. How has your book been received since its release? Fitzgerald: It was met with rave critical reviews, but by an indifferent public. It’s Christmas time, folks! Please, give a starving writer a break and buy at least by one paperback. Interviewer: So, did you have an actual person in mind or some kind of model for Ben Hackett when you wrote the book? Fitzgerald: Not really, just bits and pieces from people I’ve known or admired over the years – although the eight cigars a day that Hackett smokes is strictly autobiographical. Interviewer: So, your book is set in Paris, France … Fitzgerald: No, actually it's set in Paris, Texas. Interviewer (slightly flustered): Ummm, but Mr. Fitzgerald, I’m looking at the back cover of your book right now and it says Paris, France. Fitzgerald: Just kidding. Just checking to see if you actually read the book – or at least the back cover. Interviewer: Yes, well …. So your book captures a lot of the charm of what it must have been like to have been an American reporter living in Paris in the 1960s. What did your research consist of in writing your book? Fitzgerald: Spending a lot of time drinking at Harry’s New York bar in Paris. Interviewer: In the book, your main character, Ben Hackett, has several Walter Mitty-esque encounters with authentic celebrities from the 1960s. How did you come up with those characters? Fitzgerald: Thank you for that question, Senator. Well, I did do some research and found that each of the real characters I wrote about had some connection to Paris in the time frame in which I placed them. For instance, in “Chestnut Man” we know that Marlon Brando was in fact in Paris around the time I write about, so I just took that fact, threw Hackett into the mix and voila. Interviewer: Your book is a series of fictional short stories, why not just write a complete novel? Fitzgerald: Bad attention span, plus – as you can well imagine – anyone who smokes eight cigars is on borrowed time. Interviewer: Very little is known about you, can you tell us a bit more about you? Fitzgerald: Nope. I write books, smoke cigars, and give bad interviews. What more is there to know? Interviewer: Do you have any ideas for a new book? Fitzgerald: Nope, do you? If you do, I’ll do an amazon profit share with you. Interviewer: Has anyone contacted you about the film or TV rights to your book? Fitzgerald: Ha! Ha!! Good one! Now THAT’S comedy!
