After completing my graduate studies in cultural anthropology, I followed an age-old trope: a white European male going to Africa to prove himself as a man and academic through ethnographic fieldwork. In this process, I became disillusioned and unsatisfied with the prospect of asking people questions merely to earn a doctorate and potentially making a career for myself in academia. My personal moral breakdowns were a starting point for opening up to life’s potential. For me, this included writing for a broader audience, becoming a couples and family therapist, and exploring relational approaches to ‘psychotherapy.’
