My name is Galen Spiegler. I am an ability.fluid pansexual cisgender man, who uses he/him/his pronouns. What this means is I do not take a person’s ability status, gender, or biological sex into account when looking for a partner, and that my assigned sex matches my gender identity. During my birth, my oxygen was cut off for a few moments, resulting in me living with the challenging, inspiring, and sometimes depressing condition of cerebral palsy (CP). I had a typical childhood living with my mom, dad, and two sisters in southwestern New Hampshire. I always had a knack for school. Like other boys, I also was an adrenaline enthusiast. I enjoyed white water rafting, biking, canoeing, snow and water skiing, as well as extreme power wheelchair sports. Professional Background At 19, I moved to Dayton, Ohio, to attend college at Wright State University. My goal was to study environmental science and go on to grad school for architecture to design environmentally friendly buildings. However, I soon realized that was not my calling. At the same time, I was in my Psychology 101 class, and I was falling in love with it; so, I majored in Psychology. College was challenging because our society values people who can function at a certain speed and duration. However, I would not have it any other way because, through having to complete my work promptly, I met some of the most fantastic people in the world. By hiring them to help me with my homework, I was able to complete all my coursework and, simultaneously, make lifelong friends. In my second year of college, I took a human sexuality course and fell head over heels for the subject of sex. I finally found something that I loved and could understand fully. I started doing my research. As I searched the web, I realized that hardly anyone talked about sexuality within the disability community. That was my inspiration for my life goal. I want to return to the classroom and earn my doctorate in clinical psychology, to become a sexual rehabilitation therapist. I became known on campus as an expert on sexuality and disability. I have written papers on the issue and am very vocal about it. A few years ago, my cry for sexual equity for those living with disabilities reached a professor, and I had the honor of addressing her human sexuality class. In the fall of 2017, I was a presenter at the Breaking Silences Conference on the interplay between sexuality and disability at Wright State University. For my professional goals, I see myself working three days a week in my private practice while working at a rehabilitation hospital or a group home to help patients recover from physical trauma. Above all else, I hope to use my graduate degree to help others lead healthy, happier lives.
