Francesca G. Varela was raised in Oregon’s Willamette Valley. She graduated from the University of Oregon in 2015 with a major in Environmental Studies and a minor in Creative Writing. During her time at UO, Francesca had pieces published in campus publications including Envision: Environmental Journalism and The Ecotone Journal of Environmental Studies. She then attended the University of Utah, and received her master’s degree in Environmental Humanities in 2018. Francesca has written articles and stories for The Buckman Journal, The Wayfarer, Oregon Wild, 350PDX, the Oregon League of Conservation Voters, 1000 Friends of Oregon, and the Oregon Sierra Club. She now lives in the Portland area and continues to write environmentally-themed novels. Francesca’s debut novel, Call of the Sun Child, was a finalist in the 2015 Next Generation Indie Book Awards and won a bronze medal for Best First Book at the 2014 Moonbeam Children’s Book Awards. Her second novel, Listen, was honored as a notable book at the 2016 Sigurd F. Olson Nature Writing Awards, and was also a finalist in the 2017 Next Generation Indie Book Awards, the 2016 USA Best Book Awards, and the 2016 Foreword Indies Book of the Year Awards. Her third novel, The Seas of Distant Stars, won the 2019 Independent Publisher Book Award for Science Fiction and was a finalist in the 2019 Next Generation Indie Book Awards. Francesca's newest novel, Blue Mar, was released in 2021. When not writing or reading, Francesca spends her time practicing piano, figure skating, doing yoga, hiking, walking her dog, Cashew, and exploring Oregon’s wild places.
