Ellen Ryan is a journalist and bestselling author from Wicklow, Ireland, who has contributed to the Irish Independent and Irish Times, among other media. Her debut book, Girls Who Slay Monsters (HarperCollins), was an Irish bestseller for Christmas. It won ‘Children’s Book of the Year: Senior’ at the An Post Irish Book Awards 2022 and was shortlisted for overall book of the year. It went on to win Children’s Books Ireland KPMG ‘Book of the Year Award’ award and the ‘Children’s Books Ireland KPMG Junior Juries Award’, 2023, as voted for by thousands of young readers across Ireland. Girls Who Slay Monsters (HarperCollins Ireland) was the official inspiration for Ireland’s national 2023 St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Ryan’s second book, Gods Don't Cry (HarperCollins), was shortlisted for the ‘Children’s Book of the Year: Senior’ at the An Post Irish Book Awards 2023. It featured on the Irish children’s bestseller list for Christmas. Both books have been co-listed by Crocodile Books, for a 2024 release in the USA. Before writing her books, Ellen was asked if she would use her birth name Ryan - daughter of her father - or Meaney - wife of her husband. But she is also Ellen, daughter of Paula the artist, who is daughter of Carmel the scholar, who is daughter of Nelly, who witnessed the founding of a nation.
