Derek is a graduate of University College Cork holding a Bachelor of Science in Bio-Chemical Engineering and a research Master's in Applied Psychology, providing an unusual combination of technical and neuroscience background that reflects in his written work. Derek's writing style is imaginative, mixing a science-based background with a dry sense of humour and imagination. His first two books, titled "Natural Frequency" and "Wildest Moments," originated from his studies in Applied Psychology and are a unique collection of short stories that emerged from working with disadvantaged teenagers and young adults who shared personal stories through fictitious characters. The stories in these first books focus on characters such as an Irish Witch representing the young adult, a Pigeon symbolizing the future, and a Frog embodying the regrets of the past. Each short story concludes with a moral message for the reader to interpret to their own life circumstances. The writing style is casual and comedic, blending fantasy, comedy and real life experiences. This book series was also published weekly on various social media platforms across Europe in different languages, developing almost a cult following among its readership base. The third book, titled "Alice's Mind," is a subject direction change and a nod towards neuroscience. This novella reflects Derek's own personal experiences with aging parents who both suffered from age-related dementia and later succumbed to complications brought on by Alzheimer's disease. Released in August 2024, Derek aptly titled the fourth book "Mind Keeper: Some Monsters are Real." This book is Derek's first novel and moves away from short story format to create a more mature reading. The subject is dark psychology and examines aspects of multiple personality disorder in a female character called Letty Stark. Rich in neuroscience, the story weaves through the three personalities of the one person, the voices in her mind representing anger, emotions, and rationality. Each personality struggling for dominance in the same mind. Derek is from Waterford, Ireland and is a parent to 3 adult children. He still works in the Pharmaceutical area and also actively interested in the psychology of human behaviour.
