For most of my childhood, I was a reluctant reader, so it would have come as a surprise to most of my teachers and my parents — who were avid readers themselves — that I’d go on to author two novels. They might have been a little less surprised, however, to hear about my graphic novel, because of my fixation on cartoons (who doesn’t love to see Wile E. Coyote or Marvin the Martian get their just desserts) and comic books (Yay, Spidey and the Fantastic Four).   That focus on the visual side of things led me to Syracuse University where I graduated from the School of Visual Arts, then into animation for nearly a decade. Surprisingly, you can learn a lot about writing as an animator, because you must learn how to inhabit a character’s body and move it about in a world of its own. After animation, I turned to advertising, where I worked as an art director for many, many years. During both careers I sketched hundreds of storyboards, which was super helpful when developing The Night Librarian, later on.   Along the way I learned to love books, typically devouring audiobooks each morning and novels at night. I also tried my hand at illustrated children’s books with no luck (they are a lot harder than you think, at least they were for me). Then, at the ripe old age of fifty-two, I started work on Billy Bones: Tales from the Secrets Closet. It was published two years later in 2008, followed by Billy Bones: The Road to Nevermore in 2009.   Fast forward to the even riper age of seventy-two, when I was finally able to combine character animation, storyboarding, and writing skills to come up with The Night Librarian, a graphic novel dedicated to the magic of books, librarians, classic stories, and turning those who are reluctant around books into life-long readers.
