Hi, I am Charles Vaught. Throughout my life I've held numerous job titles - commercial fisherman, associate producer, bartender, mailman, marijuana industry manual laborer, wildland firefighter, janitor, ESL teacher, reforestation technician, but it is the title of author that I hold nearest and dearest to my heart. I am the author of two nonfiction books, Northern Jaeger and State of Fire. Northern Jaeger chronicles my life as a commercial fisherman in the Bering Sea. It asks the question 'do you know the story behind the food you eat?' while my memoir about a young man's journey of self-discovery set against the backdrop of the commercial fishing industry seeks to answer that question with wit, hilarity, and firsthand knowledge. State of Fire gives a raw, unexpected, and all-too-truthful view of my journey into the world of wildland firefighting. Based on my experiences as a crewmember on the Highlands 20, once described as an “elite 20-man handcrew.” This book pulls back the curtain on the mysteries of those who go toe-to-toe in battles with Nature, exposing various overlooked aspects of what it means and takes to fight wildfire. I enjoy writing fiction, but my true passion is nonfiction, especially creative nonfiction as it allows me to use the tools of fiction to craft personal essays that are both relatable and exciting to read. I am currently guts deep into the writing of my next book about my years spent teaching English as a second language in Vietnam, as well as a horror screenplay.
