His third book ‘Surviving Deep Waters”, is set for a February 8th 2022 release: Post Hill Press is publisher with distribution by Simon and Shuster. Bruce’s nearly 50 years as a broadcast journalist include 22 Emmys, Induction into the Society of Professional Journalists Hall of Fame, The Washington DC Hall of Fame and The Capitol Press Club journalist of the year award. In 2018 Bruce's anchor work was chosen for a Morrow award. He was also awarded the 2018 NATAS Board of Governors award. His reporting earned him the prestigious Ted Yates award which is presented when an individual has demonstrated “outstanding professional and personal qualities in their contribution to television news and public affairs in the National Capital Chesapeake Bay region”. Bruce Johnson’s Civic and Community Service awards number in the hundreds. This year he's serving as ambassador to the Covenant House which rescues homeless young people from the streets. Upon his retirement Bruce's image was added to one of the Washington area's highest profile murals outside the legendary Ben's Chili Bowl restaurant on historic U street, along side figures that include First Lady Michelle and President Barack Obama, Oprah Winfry, Harriet Tubman, and Mohammed Ali. Bruce Johnson attended the (HBCU) Kentucky State University for three years. He later graduated with a degree in Political Science from Northern Kentucky University and later earned a Master's degree in Public Affairs (MPA) from the University of Cincinnati. in 1972, before transferring to NKU, Bruce went to work for WCPO-TV, the CBS station in Cincinnati. Four years later Bruce joined the CBS station, WTOP-TV which eventually became WUSA-TV in Washington, DC. For nearly 45years after that…his assignments included every major local and national news story. There were also special assignments outside the country to major cities that included Moscow, Paris, Stockholm, Rome, Budapest, Bangkok, Tokyo, Dakar, Port au Prince, Haiti, Beijing and Shanghai China and Havana. Professional organizations include the National Press Club and the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) and the (SPJ)Society of Professional Journalists. Bruce is a lifetime member of Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity. He's married with three adult children and four grand children. Bruce and his wife Lori make their primary residence in Washington, DC. They enjoy spending time in Lewes Delaware, near the Bay and Atlantic Ocean. In 1992 while on a news assignment, Bruce suffered a heart attack. He later trained and completed the 26.2 mile marine corp marathon. His recovery is captured in his first book, "Heart to Heart", in which he profiles 12 diverse men and women who survived heart attacks. Heart to Heart was published in the US and Europe and eventually purchased by a publisher in China. Bruce was invited to Beijing and Shanghai on a "Heart to Heart" book tour. Bruce has also authored an e-book, "All or Nothing, The Victor Page Story" based on an exclusive series of interviews with a former basketball star at Georgetown University who is now in prison. In 2018, Northern Kentucky University awarded this "distinguished" alumnus with an honorary doctorate degree. The day after his commencement address on the NKU campus, Bruce began chemotherapy treatment for Non Hodgkins Lymphoma. Today he is a cancer survivor and advocate for cancer and heart attack survivors. Bruce has also been inducted into the Kentucky Journalism Hall of Fame which is housed at the University of Kentucky in Lexington, Ky. In 2021 this author and recently retired journalist founded The Bruce Johnson Group, an LLC that works in communications coaching, crisis management, college lecturing and public speaking. The Bruce Johnson Group includes a production company which produces high end video presentations and documentaries.
