Bruce Genaro is a writer who has blazed unconventional paths academically and professionally. He grew up in Connecticut and lived for a time in Boston before settling in Northern California. He started out his career in architecture, then worked in sales, marketing, public relations, design, and retail. He has worked on the Pacific Stock Exchange, been a realtor, a book reviewer, a banker, a hotel manager, a…well, the list goes on and on. He attended several community colleges, Boston Architectural College, and the University of Hartford. He spent a year at a university in London and earned his bachelor’s degree from Dominican University in San Rafael (magna cum laude). In 2008 he graduated from the University of San Francisco (USF) with an MFA in creative writing. While attending college in London, Mr. Genaro came across a newspaper article about the last prince of Italy. He was drawn to the story by the prince’s struggle with mental illness. Having struggled with bipolar disorder himself, Mr. Genaro knew he was the best person to tell this story. His intention was to give readers a sense of what it’s like to deal with the disorder on a daily basis and the ways in which the mind works: how it plays tricks on us, and how we play tricks on it. In addition to his honesty in describing the symptoms, he brings to life a core coping mechanism for people with the disorder: the use of humor, which is necessary for anyone trying to navigate a life with manic depression. He hopes readers will feel the prince’s pain, but never feel sorry for him. After several false starts, Mr. Genaro enrolled in the Master of Fine arts program at USF, specifically to hone his writing skills in order to do justice to the story. After thinking about the story for several years and working on it for many more, he finally finished the novel in 2018 and it was published in April 2019. One of his readers, Karl (K.M.) Soehnlein, author of the Lambda Literary Award winning novel, The World of Normal Boys, said this about an early draft: “The novel has many pleasures. The settings are vividly evoked, the central romance, convincing and enchanting, and the characters deeply drawn. Perhaps the best sign of a well written novel is when the reader finds himself quoting passages to a friend, as I did.” Another reader, Kaui Hart Hemmings (author of The Descendants) said the prose was “absolutely engrossing, fluid and enchanting,” and that the voice was, “compelling and controlled.” Mr. Genaro relocated back to his home state of Connecticut a few years ago and is currently working on a memoir about a person who is also bipolar, but, unfortunately, not a prince.
