Beverly Lowry was born in Memphis, Tennessee. She grew up in Greenville, Mississippi. The extensive list of her work includes short stories, essays, book reviews and feature articles in such periodicals as The New Yorker, The New York Times Book Review, the Washington Post, the Oxford American and the Boston Globe. The winner of an NEA Literary Grant, a Guggenheim fellowship and prizes awarded by the Texas Institute of Letters, she taught for many years in the MFA Program of George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia. Her published books include six books of fiction and five of nonfiction. Fiction: Come Back, Lolly Ray; Emma Blue; Daddy’s Girl; The Perfect Sonya; Breaking Gentle; and The Track of Real Desires. Nonfiction: Crossed Over: A Murder, a Memoir; Her Dream of Dreams: the Rise and Triumph of Madam C.J. Walker; Harriet Tubman: Imagining a Life: Who Killed These Girls: The Murder that Rocked a Texas Town; and Deer Creek Drive: A Reckoning of Memory and Murder in the Mississippi Delta.
