Many years ago, after being expelled from grammar school and flunking art school, I hitchhiked through France and got a job as a deck hand on an arms dealer’s yacht in Puerto Banús before returning to London to form a punk band that opened for The Clash at The Lyceum. By the early 1980s I had stumbled into a writing career with i-D magazine, where I eventually became co-editor before embarking on a freelance career. Over more than three decades in journalism I have filed hundreds of features on crime, popular culture, fashion and travel for the Guardian, Observer, Sunday Times and Sunday Telegraph, as well as various UK and international magazines including Condé Nast Traveller, Courrier Internationale and Die Weltwoche. I went on to work as a news editor at MTVEurope, wrote a weekly column for the Independent and moved from Paris to Miami to New York to Los Angeles, where I earned a living teaching grammar at a private prep school, and writing treatments for TV commercials. Although some of my journalism had been re-published in anthologies, and while I wrote the text for DVN 1-50, a monograph on the work of Belgian fashion designer Dries Van Noten, the true crime memoir My Brother the Killer is my first book. ————————————————————
