Alan Gallay holds the Lyndon B. Johnson Chair of U.S. History at Texas Christian University. He has twice been awarded research grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, was a Fulbright Lecturer at the University of Auckland in New Zealand, and held a Mellon Faculty Fellowship in the Humanities at Harvard University, where he taught African American Studies and American History. Gallay is author and editor of seven books, including the Indian Slave Trade: the Rise of the English Empire in the Amerian South, 1670-1717, which received the Bancroft Prize and the Washington State Book Award, and was selected by Library Journal as one of the ten most important books about Native America written in the previous thirty years. Gallay’s latest work is Walter Ralegh: Architect of Empire.
