Brenda Sheffield can’t believe her luck when she finds out that the family business, The Sheffield Bed and Breakfast, has been handed down to her upon the death of a relative. For too long, she’s been idle as an assistant to a PI - a new challenge is precisely what she needs. Uprooting to the idyllic village of Sweetfern Harbor was tough, but it doesn’t take long for Brenda to fall for the brightly painted shopfronts and the friendly residents. However, there’s always one who spoils the bouquet.

Brenda Sheffield is thrilled to host the East Coast Acting Troupe in her inn set above the Atlantic Ocean. Excitement permeates the Sheffield Bed and Breakfast and injects new life in the small town of Sweetfern Harbor. But the next morning, one of the cast members informs her that Ellen Teague, the famous actress, is dead in her bed. As if this discovery isn’t shocking enough, Brenda is dismayed when Detective Mac Rivers narrows her down as his prime suspect and states she has the strongest motive for killing the star.

Excitement races through Sweetfern Harbor as the famous July boat races near. Brenda Sheffield finds herself busier than ever at Sheffield bed and breakfast. Her place is booked solid, and calls come daily from potential and hopeful customers that have to be turned down. Brenda has never been as happy as she is now. Detective Mac Rivers asks her to marry him, and she accepts. Her disappointment comes when he wants her to wait to announce the news until after the long weekend is over. She reluctantly agrees.

Halloween draws closer and each day brings more imaginative ghost stories to Brenda Sheffield’s attention. She is well aware that the Sheffield Bed and Breakfast is conducive to the notions the place is haunted. Allie and housekeeper Phyllis Lindsey come up with the idea to give candlelight tours during Sweetfern Harbor’s Halloween festivities. First, Brenda must find out all she can about her bed and breakfast from the local library. When she meets with Mrs. Perch, Librarian, she is horrified to discover the sinister side of Sheffield Bed and Breakfast.

Brenda Sheffield wishes her father would respond to her invitations to visit Sheffield Bed and Breakfast. So far, only silence answers her calls and letters. That her once loving father chooses to widen the gap in their relationship is the only thing missing from Brenda’s happiness. Above all, she hopes he will accept the invitation to her wedding that is coming up in less than a month. Tim Sheffield cannot understand why his only daughter wishes to marry someone who has the lowly career as detective of a small police force in a town like Sweetfern Harbor.

Brenda Sheffield at age 46 is as excited as a young 20-year-old thinking of her upcoming wedding. Christmas Eve will present two weddings, since her best friend Phyllis Lindsey will participate in a double wedding with her. Brenda is sure her young Reservationist Allie Williams will have it filled before the day is over.

It’s finally her time to make a difference. Brenda Sheffield Rivers can hardly contain her excitement when the local hospital invites her to host a fundraiser at Sheffield Bed and Breakfast for cancer research. With so many ideas - she is spoilt for choice! After planning an elaborate Masquerade Gala, the night is full of dancing, juggling, music, card playing and good vibes. Until a guest slumps over the casino table - dead. This is more than just a sugar rush.

At Sweetfern, there are more than rare relics on display. Before the arrival of the collectors at Brenda’s family establishment, The Sheffield Bed and Breakfast, she was ignorant to what a wampum is until a kindly collector shows one that will feature at the highly anticipated Native American Market. However, the sight of a wampum triggers a memory in Brenda - she recalls her uncle Randolph Sheffield possessing one, a rare relic that could be in the dusty attic. Why would something so precious be left to gather dust?

When all of Brenda’s guests arrive, the atmosphere is lively and amicable - until one evening when the cast head down to the idyllic beach for an after-show performance of Mystery of the Nile.

An amateur sleuth B&B owner, a weekend wedding, and a dead body in a suitcase. Another murder mystery in the cozy beach town of Sweetfern Harbor.... In the meantime, everyone is excited for the wedding of Brenda’s father and her chef scheduled for that afternoon. Allie greets the booked guests and takes note of one who hits her the wrong way. Every guest has arrived specifically to take advantage of the night. Brenda, Phyllis, and Allie prepare their tours. Their tall tales have been embellished until they almost believe them themselves. By the time she gives her fourth tour, she hears rustling behind the hallway wall. She tells her tourists it could possibly be an entity hiding in the walls. She suspects a small animal has gotten inside somehow.
