Young elf prince Drynn has always lived in the shadow of his athletic and popular elder brother. But, when the bookish boy’s mother dies from a mystery illness and he receives the Queen’s Opal, he’s plagued by visions of the past and a growing power. And, with the gem supposedly cursing those who possess it, he must enter the human realm to hunt down the cure…or become the next to die. Outside the forest, Drynn finds much has changed with the world now ruled by greedy wizards coveting more magic.

Elves never use magic or leave the forest. They aren’t supposed to get sick either, but Drynn’s mother just died from a mysterious illness, which has targeted the elven queens for generations. With no female heir left, the symbol of the curse - a green stone called the Queen’s Opal - passes to Drynn. Unwilling to lose another family member, Drynn’s impulsive and overprotective brother drags him out of the forest to search for a cure. And the oft-diseased humans seem the most likely place to start. But the opal isn’t all that it seems.

It seemed like a simple plan. After leaving his home in the elven forest, Drynn was called as a magical avatar - a bearer. He now wants to learn all about magic and so does his new human friend. Drynn also wants to discover the remaining mysteries behind his mother's curse and so does his elder brother. The human wizards seem ready to help them. Going with them to the Wizard Tower seems the obvious solution. But even Drynn's most trusted human friend is keeping secrets enough to make the Tower a waiting death trap.

After being hunted by humans and transformed into a demonic creature called a drow, Drynn believes his family will be safer in the forest. Problem is, more drow are waiting for them there. When his brother is taken by the same drow who burned his home, Drynn is told that he needs the ashes of the phoenix to defeat them. It only would require him to return to the human kingdom and all the dangers he thought he left behind.

Wizards and drow are set to ravage the world between them, just as they had in the past...As Drynn travels back to the forest, rumors of drow haunt his steps. His brother may have killed a wizard, leading many, even among his friends, to demand his death in return. Desperate for another solution, Drynn is relieved to discover that another bearer has been called, Princess Josalene. She moves with a confidence Drynn lacks, calling an army to her side and making herself the Queen of Kalum. She has a solution for the drow problem as well.

The barriers have fallen. The war has begun. There is revolution on the streets and an invasion building in the north. Drynn’s new powers might be the key to crowning a new king and stabilizing the realm, but at what cost? Is embracing the darkness the only way to bring back the light?
