Lorelei Lee

In this comic novel written by American author Anita Loos, we follow the adventures of the fictional character Lorelei Lee, who is a young blonde flapper. This story takes place in the hedonistic Jazz Age, and is written in the form of a diary from Lorelei's viewpoint as she shares stories of the men she entertains in New York City and Europe.

Lorelei is a rising star in Hollywood when she meets Mr. Eisman, a man who compliments her intelligence and convinces her it is much more important to be educated than to be in the cinema. Plying her with books, he encourages Lorelei to write down her adventures in a diary despite her penchant for misspellings and incorrect pronunciation. Growing restless with Mr. Eisman and his simplistic routine of dinner, dancing, and returning Lorelei to her apartment, she longs to stretch her wings and experience more of the world.

If any American fictional character of the 20th century seems likely to be immortal, it is Lorelei Lee of Little Rock, Arkansas, the not-so-dumb blonde who knew that diamonds are a girl's best friend.
