Der namentlich nicht genannte Ich-Erzähler, sein Freund George Gravener und deren Londoner Freundeskreis sind fasziniert von Frank Saltram, den sie für ein Genie halten, weil er ihnen intellektuell überlegen ist. Sie sind überzeugt davon, dass Frank früher oder später ein literarisches Meisterwerk hervorbringt, dass dessen genialen Geist widerspiegelt und sehen in ihm einen neuen aufgehenden Stern am Londoner Kunsthimmel. All die verbotenen Verabredungen gelangen durch die Gitterstäbe des Telegrafenschalters in die Hände einer jungen namenlosen Frau. Aus den kryptischen Anspielungen und Abkürzungen der Telegramme reimt sie sich die Geheimnisse dahinter zusammen, besonders die Liebelei des schmucken Captain Everard zieht sie in ihren Bann.

John Lennox gibt beim Maler Baxter ein Portrait seiner Verlobten in Auftrag, allerdings ist er mit dem Resultat alles andere als zufrieden, da die Gesichtszüge seiner Liebsten einen Ausdruck in sich bergen bzw. charakterliche Eigenschaften offenbaren, welche er nach anfänglichen Formulierungsschwierigkeiten nicht als die positivsten ausmacht. Schließlich kenne Baxter seine Fast-Ehefrau nicht persönlich und das Gemälde erscheine ihm verbesserungswürdig.
