Volume Seven of Alexander' Dumas' catalogue of crime features three colourful historical figures. Albanian tyrant Ali Pacha (or Pasha) was a brigand who later became an operative of the Ottoman empire. After extending his territory to include large areas of Greece and Macedonia, and aspiring to become an independent leader, he attracted the enmity of the Sultan and was declared a rebel. He died in battle at the age of 80.

In Volume Four, Dumas relates the 1819 murder of German dramatist August von Kotzebue by Karl Ludwig Sand, the campaign to destroy Father Urbain Grandier in 1634, who was successfully convicted of witchcraft and put to a brutal death, and the consequences of the amorous relationship between the prince of Brancaleone and Nisida.

The prolific Alexandre Dumas, père, first published his famous eight-volume crime series in Paris in 1845. It contained 18 stories which, as the author notes in the introduction, had “the added value of giving the modern reader a clear picture of the state of semi-lawlessness which existed in Europe, during the middle ages.” In Volume 3, Dumas relates the tragic fate of Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots, following the death of her husband, Lord Darnley.

This volume relates the stories of the Borgias and the Cenci. The former, a family of Spanish adventurers, came to dominate the Italian peninsula, and, when Rodergio Borgia became Pope Alexander VI, the world of Christendom, in the late 15th century. The Cenci was an aristocratic family, in which rampant sexual and domestic abuse led to murder and very public execution.

In the second entry of his compilation of the most notorious deeds in European history at his point in time, Alexandre Dumas composes an essay covering a span of nearly 300 years of strife between the Catholics and Protestants of Southern France. Dumas recounts numerous instances of bloody conflict, unruly mobs, assassination, and political turmoil as the Protestants of the region fight to live and worship as they choose and Catholics endeavor to suppress a dangerous threat to their hegemony.

Héloise (la seconda moglie di Villefort) vuole concludere il suo piano diabolico: uccidere Valentine, facendo in modo che suo figlio Édouard riceva tutta l'eredità. Infatti Noirtier fa capire al dottor d'Avrigny che aveva intuito da tempo che avrebbero avvelenato la nipote, e fino a quel momento era riuscito a salvarla dandole ogni giorno un poco della sostanza mortale, neutralizzandone così parzialmente gli effetti.

A Marsiglia Edmond incontra Mercedes (che aveva appena salutato il figlio Albert in partenza per l'Africa). I due parlano a lungo: Mercedes non odia l'uomo che ha davanti, anzi rimprovera sé stessa per le scelte sbagliate che ha fatto. Le strade dei due, un tempo giovani e felicemente innamorati, si dividono per sempre. La morte inaspettata di Édouard, il figlio di Villefort, fa però sorgere in Edmond dei dubbi sulla sua opera di 'giustiziere divino'.

Dopo aver ottenuto da Danglars la sicurezza sul matrimonio con Eugénie, Andrea Cavalcanti/Benedetto viene a sapere che Caderousse lo vuole vedere e si reca da lui. Andrea gli racconta di essere convinto che il suo vero padre sia il Conte di Montecristo e Caderousse, assai interessato alla fortuna del conte, intende derubarlo nella sua casa sugli Champs Èlysées.
