Der Wij ist eine kolossale Schöpfung der Volksphantasie. So nennen die Kleinrussen den König der Gnomen, dessen Augenlider bis an die Erde reichen. Diese ganze Erzählung ist eine Volksüberlieferung. Ich wollte an ihr nichts ändern und gebe sie hier fast ebenso schlicht wieder, wie ich sie gehört habe. (Anmerkung Gogols).

Was für ein Prachtmensch Iwan Iwanowitsch doch ist. Einen herrlichen Pelzrock hat er, ein herrliches Haus und die Honoratioren der Gegend sind seine guten Bekannten. Auch Iwan Nikiforowitsch ist ein Prachtmensch. Sein Hof grenzt an den von Iwan Iwanowitsch. Die beiden sind eng befreundet. Nun hat Iwan Iwanowitsch bei Iwan Nikiforowitsch eine wunderschöne Flinte gesehen, die er unbedingt haben will. Drum geht er seinen Nachbarn besuchen, nach dem Mittagessen, bei großer Sommerhitze. Und fragt ihn, auf etlichen Umwegen, wozu der denn eine Flinte brauche. Und ob er ihm nicht die Flinte "verehren" wolle.

Die tragische Geschichte des Kosakenhauptmanns Taras Bulba entführt uns in die Kriegswehen Russlands im sechzehnten Jahrhundert. In der Familie Taras, der einen Sohn tötet, um sein Volk zu retten und die Hinrichtung des anderen nicht verhindern kann, vollzieht sich jener Zyklus, der seit Menschengedenken das Leben bestimmt: Geburt und Liebe, Tod und Trauer.

Iwan Jakowlewitsch zog des Anstandes halber einen Frack über sein Hemd, setzte sich an den Tisch, nahm etwas Salz, schnitt zwei Zwiebeln zurecht, ergriff das Messer, machte eine wichtige Miene und begann das Brot zu zerteilen. Als er es in zwei Hälften geschnitten hatte, blickte er hinein und sah darin zu seinem Erstaunen etwas Weißliches. Iwan Jakowlewitsch kratzte vorsichtig mit dem Messer und tastete mit dem Finger. – Es ist etwas Festes, – sagte er sich, was kann es sein?

Schon wieder etwas neues, ein Bienenzüchter der zur Feder greift. Man hat den Gänsen noch zu wenig Federn ausgerupft und zu wenig Lumpen zu Papier geweiht.

Ein merkwürdiger Vorfall hat sich heute ereignet. Ich stand ziemlich spät auf und als mir Mavra die geputzten Stiefel brachte fragte ich sie wie spät es wäre. Als ich hörte es hätte schon längst zehn geschlagen zog ich mich schleunigst an. Offen gestanden würde ich am liebsten überhaupt nicht ins Büro gehen. Da ich im Voraus weiß was für eine saure Miene unser Abteilungschef machen wird.

"The Nose" is the second best known story of Gogol, after "The Overcoat". A military major discovers his nose is missing and works to recover it. He finds the nose but it pretends to have a life of its own, as a fellow human. It in fact has a higher rank than the Major himself. The Major is perplexed, goes back to his apartment, and has the nose returned to him. With great joy he recovers his nose, only to find it won't reattach to his face. After much going on, he finds the nose reattached to his face.

The Russian novel has a reputation that is immense, both in narrative and in length. Unquestionably though the ideas, themes and characters make many novels rightly revered as world class, as icons of literature. The Russian short story is, in many respects, in a genre of its own. It is at its captivating best whether it’s an exploration of real-life experiences, through fantasy and fables and on to total absurdity.

The Cloak (sometimes translated as Overcoat) is a short story by Russian author Nikolai Gogol, published in 1842. The story and its author have had great influence on Russian literature, as expressed in a quote attributed to Fyodor Dostoyevsky: "We all come out from Gogol's 'Overcoat'." The story narrates the life and death of titular councillor Akaky Akakievich Bashmachkin, an impoverished government clerk and copyist in the Russian capital of St. Petersburg. Akaky is dedicated to his job, though little recognized in his department for his hard work.

May Night, or the Drowned Maiden, 1831 is the third tale in the collection Evenings on a Farm Near Dikanka by Nikolai Gogol. It was made into the opera May Night by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov in 1878–79 and also a Ukrainian setting by Mykola Lysenko. This story comes from the unnamed story-teller (who was previously responsible for "The Fair at Sorochyntsi"). In this tale, a young Cossack named Levko, the son of the mayor, is in love with Hanna. He comes to her house to talk about marriage and mentions that his father is not pleased with the idea, though he doesn't say anything directly and merely ignores him.

With his sense of humor and ability to observe, Nikolai Gogol presents the world with stories of little people: the weak and fragile people who try to hold on to life in the gloomy cities of Russia. The Mantle, which is listed among his masterpieces, describes how Russian bureaucracy turns everyone into a ghost of each other. It tells the tragicomic story of a poor low-ranking official named Akakiy Akakiyevich Bashmachkin, a faint character living on the margins of society who spends all his time diligently copying documents.

Nikolai Vasilievich Gogol was born on 1st April 1809 to a father, descended from Ukrainian Cossacks and a mother with a military background in the Ukrainian town of Sorochyntsi, then part of the Russian Empire and rich in Cossack traditions and folklore. But foreboding makes an entrance and life is now a series of cruel twists that breaks everything.

Eines Morgens findet der Barbier Iwan Jakowlewitsch eine Nase in seinem Frühstücksbrot. Sie gehört dem Kollegienassessor Kowaljow, der von nun an ohne das gute Stück in seinem Gesicht auskommen muss. Denn die Nase wandelt als eigenständiges Wesen durch St. Petersburg und hat überhaupt kein Interesse, zu seinem ursprünglichen Besitzer zurückzukehren. Die fantastische Erzählung gehört zu Gogols "Petersburger Novellen". In ihr vermischen sich wie selbstverständlich absurde Elemente mit der Realität.
