El Entierro Prematuro explora la aterradora idea de ser enterrado vivo. Poe cuenta la historia de un narrador obsesionado con su propia mortalidad y el terror de la catalepsia, una condición que puede simular la muerte. La historia se adentra en varios casos angustiantes de entierros prematuros, mezclando hechos reales y ficción. El clímax llega cuando el narrador despierta en un espacio confinado, enfrentando su peor temor.
