One of the Dalai Lama's most striking qualities is his genuine interest in Western scientific and social thought. Sono molte le pratiche dell'insegnamento buddhista che si concentrano sull'essere nel momento presente. È una condizione che ci permette di tradurre in pratica i principi fondamentali della dottrina: se rimaniamo vincolati al passato, se siamo ansiosi per il futuro, se non sperimentiamo il vuoto che deriva dalla rinuncia all'attaccamento, se non comprendiamo fino in fondo l'interdipendenza di tutte le cose, non saremo mai nelle condizioni di vivere la vita nella sua pienezza.
