Georges Simenon's autobiographical notebooks, in which he recorded his observations, experiences, anxieties and 'all the silly ideas that pass through my head', are one of the most candid self-portraits of a writer ever put to paper. À Paris, une nuit de mars, deux bateliers tirent de la Seine un clochard grièvement blessé. L'un d'eux, le jeune Van Houtte, affirme avoir noté la présence d'une Peugeot 403 rouge sur le quai, peu de temps avant le drame. Maigret retrouve les occupants de la voiture, mais ceux-ci parviennent à prouver leur innocence. L'identification du clochard ne va pas sans surprises : il s'agit d'un ancien médecin du nom de François Keller.

Der Grund: außereheliche Eskapaden. Doch nun ist er schon seit einem Monat fort, und seine Frau Nathalie fürchtet, er könne einem Verbrechen zum Opfer gefallen sein. Die Ermittlungen führen Kommissar Maigret durch die angesagtesten Nachtlokale von Paris, und er muss erkennen: Levesque hat gleich in zweifacher Hinsicht ein Doppelleben geführt.

Eine zweifelhafte Verurteilung: Hat Maigret einen Fehler gemacht? Der Mitinhaber des Pharmakonzerns Josset & Virieu hat sich der Polizei gestellt – Adrien Josset wird verdächtigt, seine Frau ermordet zu haben. Der Grund? Josset hat eine junge Geliebte und deren Vater versprochen, sie zu heiraten. Doch im Verhör am Quai des Orfèvres beteuert er vehement seine Unschuld. Maigret ist versucht, Josset zu glauben, zumal bei den Ermittlungen des Untersuchungsrichters offenbar einiges unter den Teppich gekehrt wird.

Maigret verliert die Fassung: Die Ehre des Kommissars wird angegriffen. Als der Nachtclubbesitzer Émile Boulay spurlos verschwindet, deutet zunächst einiges auf einen Racheakt im Rotlichtmilieu hin. Erst vor wenigen Wochen ist der Anführer einer korsischen Bande auf offener Straße erschossen worden. Doch Kommissar Maigret will nicht recht glauben, dass sich der arbeitsame, bescheidene Boulay mit Gangstern angelegt hat. Zwei Tage später wird Boulay erwürgt beim Friedhof Père Lachaise aufgefunden.

Maigrets folgenschwerste Aussage: Er setzt sich für einen Angeklagten ein, doch der zeigt sich gar nicht dankbar. Kommissar Maigret steht kurz vor der Pensionierung. Gerade war er mit Madame Maigret für einen Kurzurlaub an der Loire. Kaum zurück in Paris, muss er vor dem Schwurgericht aussagen. Gaston Meurant wird beschuldigt, seine Tante und deren vierjährige Pflegetochter Cécile getötet zu haben: Die Anklage lautet auf Raubmord. Ein blutiger Anzug, ein Haufen Schulden und ein anonymer Hinweis sprechen gegen den verschlossenen Rahmenmacher.

Scotland Yard ha inviato a Parigi l'ispettore Pyke per "studiare" il metodo Maigret! Pyke è molto diligente e segue Maigret come un'ombra, cosa che fa impazzire il nostro commissario. Avrà modo di vedere Maigret all'opera quando a Porquerolles viene ucciso Marcellin, un piccolo malvivente che vive su una barca. Delitto che non sarebbe stato di competenza del commissario se non fosse che Marcellin sosteneva di essere suo amico, e tutti sono convinti che sia morto proprio per questa ragione.

La signora Maigret è finita sulle prime pagine dei giornali insieme a un'amica che le ha giocato un brutto scherzo scomparendo misteriosamente dopo averle lasciato un bambino di due anni. E come se non bastasse la Signora ha deciso di ribellarsi al suo celebre marito e mettersi a indagare al posto suo. Cosa le sarà venuto in mente? Maigret è incredulo e soprattutto non capisce cosa colleghi questa vicenda all'impossibile caso Steuvels che tormenta la polizia giudiziaria.
