In this extraordinary series, Zen: The Special Transmission, Osho introduces us in 10 talks to the world of Zen. In alternating chapters, he comments on Zen sutras and responds to questions of his audience.

In this provocative talk, Osho starts with our assumption that we are interested, maybe even passionately interested, in knowing the truth - and he tears it to shreds. More than 2,500 years ago, Gautama the Buddha walked the earth, teaching to all who would listen. Buddhist lore has it that shortly after he passed away, his disciples met to recall all that they were able of the truths that Buddha had spoken. These sayings were compiled into The Dhammapada, an anthology of 423 verses containing the essence of his principles.

These discourses contain what Osho describes as the most significant statements ever made, which point to the whole secret of the mystic approach toward life. And the sutra that begins this series of discourses, he says, contains the very essence of the entire Upanishadic vision - that the universe is an indivisible totality, an organic whole. Osho illuminates these ancient texts with such clarity that their significance seems stunningly obvious.

Buddha ke ye sutra hame jagne ke liye prerit karte hai. Ve kahte hai jo bhi soye-soye ji raha hai vah maut me ja raha hai aur jo jagkar ji raha hai vah amrit path par chalne laga. Bhitar jagte hi uska pata chalta hai jo mit hi nahi sakta.

Osho responds here to a question relating to meditation, a space of "no-mind": "...meditation covers a very long pilgrimage. When I say 'meditation is witnessing', it is the beginning of meditation. And when I say 'meditation is no-mind', it is the completion of the pilgrimage. Witnessing is the beginning, and no-mind is the fulfillment. Witnessing is the method to reach the no-mind. Naturally you will feel witnessing is easier. It is close to you. But witnessing is only like seeds, and then is the long waiting period."

Jaat, paat, dharm, raajneeti mein chipe hue paakhand ka pardafaash karte hue Osho hamein ek anant ki yatra ka sanket dete hain. Ve kehte hain, mera sanyaasi anhad ki talaash mein laga hai, seemaon ka atikraman kar raha hai. Ghar chodna nahi hai, ghar mein rehte hi jaanna hai ki ghar meri seema nahi hai. The Sutra of 42 Chapters is a scripture complied in the first century CE. Each saying comes from Buddha, but the whole work was a new anthology created especially for introducing Buddhism in a new country. That’s why it makes such a good, basic introduction to the world view of Gautam Buddha.

All of the Osho audiobooks are created from his extemporaneous talks, and in this volume reflect the intimate setting in which they were given, with small audiences of those gathered in the Oregon commune around him. Everything is on the table - belief in God, the meaning of compassion, what happens when we die.

These talks are answers to personal questions from seekers that touch on a wide variety of fundamental life issues. Osho is one of the most provocative mystics of our time, who inspires millions of people worldwide in their individual search for meditation and transformation.

Not believing, but only experiencing, says Osho in this inspiring series of talks, is a way of finding truth and meaning. While Nietzsche's declaration that "God is dead, therefore man is free" was an incredible step in understanding, he argues, it is in itself a negative solution and does not bring freedom. Simply removing God is not enough. Osho is no atheist by far and not in favor of any "anti-believe" system either. "It is meditation that fulfills your inner being and takes away the vacuum that used to be filled by a great lie, God."

Osho explains that these sutras are concerned with aspects of man's unawareness and that Buddha's whole message is concerned with the raising of our consciousness. These sutras were compiled by Buddha's disciples to contain the essence of all his teachings. This was the last turning of the Wheel of Dharma, 2,500 years ago. At the beginning of his commentaries on these sutras, Osho says he is setting the Wheel of Dharma in motion again.

Everybody is afraid of intimacy. It is another thing whether you are aware of it or not. Intimacy means exposing yourself before a stranger. We are all strangers - nobody knows anybody. We are even strangers to ourselves, because we don't know who we are.

Osho describes how our goal orientation can never be satisfied. After power and sex, fame and fortune we can move on to enlightenment, finding God, whatever. How can we get out of the trap of desire and enjoy being alive?

There is a famous Zen story about a disciple, Riko, who once asked his master, Nansen, to explain to him the old Zen koan of the goose in the bottle. Namely, if a man puts a gosling into a bottle and feeds the gosling through the bottle's neck until it grows and becomes a goose - and then there is simply no more room inside the bottle - how can the man get it out without killing the goose or breaking the bottle? In response, Nansen shouts, "Riko!" and gives a great clap with his hands.

Jivan ke satya kahi door akash me nahi chipe hai. Ve yahi likhe pade hai charo taraf. Patte-patte par aur kan-kan par ved likhe hai, bas dekhnevali ankh chahiye. Anubhav ke phul ikaththe karake mat rakhna, unka itra nikalna, tabhi satya milega.

Paramatma nikat me jana jata hai. Nikat ko pahachanne ka marg hai prem. Anuman nahi, tark nahi, jab prem me doobkar tumhara hriday geet gungunata hai tab tum paramatma ka anubhav karte ho. Paramatma anuman nahi, prem ki pratiti hai.
