This is a diverting delight, a window on romance in literature. There is even Fanny Hill trying not to discover what physical love is about when set upon by an old roué who has paid for the privilege. And really that’s not surprising, for JM Barrie was a writer of great note. Short stories are often overlooked as being the poor, under-developed relatives of greater works. But from writers of the calibre of Barrie, this is just not so. In the world of the Victorian Club, it does not do for a gentleman to be seen to take an interest in any member of the working classes. How dreadfully inconvenient then, when the narrator's waiter, begins to display alarming tendencies towards having a personality, a home life, emotions and fears of his own.
