Ce roman fait suite au "Mystère de la chambre jaune". On y retrouve, autour de Roulletabille, les principaux personnages. Mathilde Stangerson et Robert Darzac, enfin mariés, se rendent en villégiature chez leurs amis Édith et Arthur Rance au château d'Hercule. Mais Larsan que l'on croyait mort réapparaît et terrorise Mathilde. Rouletabille, aidé de son fidèle Sinclair, enquête.

Joseph Rouletabille est hanté par une femme qui venait le visiter, enfant, au pensionnat et dont il conserve le souvenir obsédant du parfum. Tandis qu'il s'en ouvre à Sinclair, son fidèle acolyte, il apprend que son amie Mathilde Stangerson convolant en voyage de noces avec son mari Robert Darzac, est en danger. Il s'empresse de la rejoindre, craignant le retour de l'illusionniste et intrépide Ballmeyer.

En 1877, l'Opéra de Paris est secoué par des phénomènes inquiétants... Lors des répétitions ou des spectacles, les accidents se multiplient. On murmure qu'il s'agit d'un fantôme qui menace les directeurs de l'Opéra des pires catastrophes s'ils ne lui obéissent pas. Cet être énigmatique qui erre dans le théâtre, prend sous son aile la jeune cantatrice Christine Danaé avec qui il noue une relation étrange. Il finit par l'enlever, peut-être dans un accès de folie.

Gaston Leroux is best known for writing the novel The Phantom of the Opera. However, he also wrote some excellent detective stories. In fact,Leroux's contribution to French detective fiction is considered a parallel to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's in the United Kingdom and Edgar Allan Poe's in America. In this, his most popular mystery, rival detectives try to crack a case.

Christine is a young singer in the chorus at the Paris Opera. She hears an unseen voice that sings and speaks to her, which she believes is an angel. The voice agrees with this and offers to teach her more about music. The voice, however, belongs to a disfigured genius, Erik, who lives in the basement of the Opera house.

El fantasma de la Ópera es la historia de un tenebroso personaje, quien, a pesar del tormento que le provoca su fealdad, lucha por vivir para satisfacer su pasión por la belleza.

Eric possessed many truly brilliant and extraordinary abilities including musical genuis. Being outcast from society for his ugliness, Eric was forced to wander from one country to another. When in France, he worked at fairs demonstrating tricks and ventriloquism. Later he became a bricklayer and was engaged in building the Paris Opera House. Upon completion of the construction, Eric decided to hide from the world in the cellars of the Opera and turned this great building into his own empire.

Gaston Leroux spiega in questa famoso romanzo, pubblicato nel 1910, tutta la sua passione per il mistero e i trabocchetti, già noti al pubblico nel "Mistero della camera gialla" (che fu pubblicato tre anni prima). Qui lo scenario è molto più importante: l'Opéra di Parigi, che contiene un mondo sotterraneo ignoto ai più, ove si trova persino un lago. E il leggendario fantasma sarà poi davvero un essere soprannaturale? L'archetipo del mostro e della bella viene riproposto in questo avvincente romanzo, insieme a note ironiche e romantiche che colorano di rosa il nero del mistero.

Un vero rompicapo poliziesco: un delitto commesso in una stanza ermeticamente chiusa. Leroux cita espressamente i suoi colleghi autori che hanno proposto rompicapi simili: Edgar Allan Poe e Arthur Conan Doyle. Il personaggio in grado di risolvere il mistero è profondamente diverso da Sherlock Holmes: è un giovane reporter di appena diciott'anni soprannominato Rouletabille, che, a fine romanzo, l'autore promette di far diventare il protagonista di altri suoi romanzi. Ma il romanzo è davvero ben congegnato e nessun dettaglio rimane privo di spiegazione.

Dans le roman qui précède celui-ci il l'a délivrée du Château Noir où la tenait prisonnière l'ennemi de sa famille, Gaulow, devenu Turc sous le nom de Kara-Selim. Mais elle a maintenant un comportement bizarre qui déroute Rouletabille et risque de faire tomber aux mains des Turcs les plans de guerre de son oncle qui se trouvent dans le précieux coffret byzantin dont s'est emparé Gaulow sans savoir ce qu'il contient.

Los hechos ocurrieron en el castillo del Glandier un edificio muy antiguo y una habitación cerrada escuchar los gritos de auxilio de la víctima desde su interior, disparos, ruidos de golpes y muebles que se caen, pero nadie puede entrar a socorrer a la joven que está siendo atacada.
