This is a realistic tale of settlers in a town called Ingrid. It is a classic Western, set against the extraordinary environment of the West as it always was: stark, savage, and brutal.

Lieutenant Parke Stobo was assigned to take 25 men, a guide, and three days' rations into the mesquites by way of Pete Kempel's ranch. Stobo was also instructed to give the greenhorn Lieutenant Wells a taste of the country. It should have been just a routine detail.

It could be a land rush, as had happened in the past, or something worse, if the rumor really proved false.
