Short stories have always been a sort of instant access into an author’s brain, their soul and heart. They can lift our lives into locations, people and experiences with a sweep of landscape, narration, feelings and emotions that is difficult to achieve elsewhere. In this volume we come up against the definition of Northern Europe. There are many, each with plausibility and each so obvious. So, here’s ours.

Der Nachtwächter Kreuzgang streift nachts durch die Gassen seiner Stadt und verkündet seinen Mitbürgern die Zeit. Er bleibt den meisten Menschen unbekannt. Für ihn ist die Welt ein Irrenhaus und die Gesellschaft verrückt. Kreuzgang schaut in die beleuchteten Fenster und nimmt so am Leben seiner Mitbürger teil. Auf seinen nächtlichen Spaziergängen unterhält er sich mit Gott, dem Teufel und meist sich selbst. Dabei denkt er über das Leben, den Tod und seine Mitbürger nach.

In seinem Roman "Am Meer" (Originaltitel: "I havsbandet". Erstdruck: 1890) schildert Strindberg das Leben des Fischereiinspektors Axel Borg, der auf eine abgelegene Schäreninsel versetzt wird, um die dortige Fischerei zu modernisieren. Die ablehnende Haltung der Inselbewohner und seine eigene, zum Teil überhebliche Selbsteinschätzung, lassen Borg jedoch schon bald immer mehr zum Einzelgänger werden. Borg vereinsamt angesichts der ablehnend eingestellten Bevölkerung zunehmend, bis er ein Liebesverhältnis mit der Sommerfrischlerin Maria eingeht.

"Inferno" är en självbiografisk roman av August Strindberg som skildrar Strindbergs vistelse i Paris och Österrike under åren 1894-1896.

När fastlänningen Carlsson kommer till hemsö för att hjälpa änkan Flod med sitt lantbruk har han höga ambitioner. Men det blir inte riktigt som han tänkt sig. Samtidigt förälskar sig Carlsson i en av gårdens pigor men hans uppvaktning uppskattas inte och ansvaret för gården tynger honom.

Året är 1870, det fransk-tyska kriget härjar för fullt och utarmar befolkning och natur. Kriget drivs framåt av hänsynslösa ledare men när den tyske löjtnanten Herr von Bleichroden får order om att avrätta franska krigsfångar grips han av panik. Han vidarebefordrar ordern, men när avrättningarna är genomförda drabbas han av svåra samvetskval ... "Samvetskval" är en fredsnovell från 1884 skriven av August Strindberg som följer huvudpersonen von Bleichrodens inre kamp mot sig själv.

" "Ensam" är en självbiografisk novell av August Strindberg som publicerades 1903.
