Als Bruder Gabriel leise durch die Eingangshalle zurück zu seiner Klosterzelle schleicht, vernimmt er dumpfe, vertraute Stimmen, die durch die angelehnte Tür seines Labors dringen. Ein unheilvolles Gefühl überkommt ihn, und er macht sich innerlich auf eine Konfrontation mit Sherlock Holmes und Pater Brown gefasst. Als er schließlich das Labor betritt, wird er von Pater Brown auch gleich zur Rede gestellt...

Der Priesterdetektiv Pater Brown wird von Scotland Yard beauftragt, einen mysteriösen Fall zu lösen, bei dem sein Glaubensbruder Gabriel verschwunden ist. Da Pater Brown in dieser Angelegenheit persönlich involviert ist und ihm der nötige Weitblick fehlt, bittet er Sherlock Holmes und Dr. Watson um Unterstützung. Gemeinsam durchsuchen die Drei die Klosterzelle von Bruder Gabriel und entdecken dabei einen Hohlraum im Boden...

Sherlock Holmes ist mit einer aufsehenerregenden Mordserie konfrontiert: Der Täter scheint sich bei der Opferauswahl an den sieben Todsünden des christlichen Glaubens zu orientieren. Die Ermittlungen gestalten sich zunehmend schwierig und überaus gefährlich.

Holmes und Watson erfahren von einem Schussattentat vor dem Polizeigebäude, dessen Ziel offenbar Inspektor Lestrade war. Sofort und voller Sorge machen sie sich zum Tatort auf, doch der Anschlag bleibt in jeder Hinsicht mysteriös.

Verzweifelt suchen Holmes und Watson am Friedhof nach Mary, die offenbar lebendig begraben wurde. Es bleibt nur wenig Zeit für ihre Rettung, da der im Sarg vorhandene Sauerstoff bald zur Neige gehen und Mary sterben würde.

Im Krankenhaus weichen Watson und Holmes nicht von Marys Seite, während Lestrade den verhafteten Sommerset ins Polizeigefängnis überstellt. Als Mary endlich das Bewusstsein wiedererlangt, kann sie sich an nichts erinnern.

Lady Diana Canbury ist mit ihrer Equipage auf dem Weg zum Ball des Herzogs. An einer Kreuzung kommt ihre Kutsche zum Stehen, als plötzlich der Verschlag aufgerissen wird und ein bewaffneter Räuber zu ihr in die Kutsche springt. Mit einer schnellen Bewegung greift er der Lady an die Brust und reißt ihr die Brosche mit dem überaus wertvollen, gelben Kanarien – Brillanten vom Kleid. Die Lady fällt in Ohnmacht, der Räuber entflieht in die Nacht.

Auf dem Hammersmith-Friedhof suchen Holmes, Lestrade und Watson die finale Konfrontation mit dem letzten Täter, doch es kommt anders. Was zunächst nach einer glücklichen Fügung aussieht, entpuppt sich allerdings als Falle.

In der Baker Street bricht ein Feuer aus. Holmes und Watson werden am Brandort von einem Mann angesprochen, der sich als Stabschef einer mächtigen kriminellen Organisation zu erkennen gibt und Holmes vor eine lebensbedrohliche Wahl stellt.

Nachdem es Mary besser geht, begeben sich Holmes und Watson zu Scotland Yard, um der Befragung Sommersets beizuwohnen. Die Vernehmung gestaltet sich zunächst wenig erhellend und endet dann abrupt durch einen überraschenden Zwischenfall.

Auf dem Exoplanet Wolf 1069 b ist ein honoriger Bürger unter merkwürdigen Umständen ums Leben gekommen. Er wurde von einer Kopfgeldjägerin aufgrund eines falschen Steckbriefs erschossen. Sherlock Holmes soll nun - wie immer von Dr. Watson unterstützt - der Sache auf den Grund gehen.
