Po patnácti letech se objevuje jako doktor Antekirt a vydává se po stopě udavačů, které hodlá náležitě potrestat. Román je poctou dílu Hrabě Monte Christo Alexandra Dumase staršího, kterého Verne považoval za svůj vzor a svoji knihu mu i věnoval. Podobně jako hrabě z původního díla je i doktor Antekirt velmi bohatý, což mu slouží k dosažení pomsty.

Verne líčí v románu nejen zeměpisné a přírodní zajímavosti, ale je tu i dobrodružná zápletka – plukovník Munroe hodlá pomstít smrt své ženy.
