Today we have ghosts that haunted our ancestors, as well as our own modern revenants, and there appears to be no earthly use trying to banish or exorcise them by such a simple strategy as refusing to believe in them. Since man knows that whether or not he has seen a ghost, presently he will become one, and thus he has become fascinated with the subject. Therefore he creates ghosts, not merely in his own image, but according to his dreams of power.

Montressor es tan buen actor, que su buen amigo Fortunato no se da cuenta ni por un momento de lo que hay realmente tras su fachada de amabilidad y cortesía.Aparte de los juegos de palabras que el autor hace con los nombres de los personajes que en realidad representan los dos lados de una moneda. (Montressor – mi tesoro) (Fortunato – afortunado), se produce una constante antítesis entre ellos, mientras Montressor va con máscara negra y atuendo de caballero, Fortunato está vestido a la usanza de la locura del carnaval como un bufón. Mientras el primero está completamente sobrio, el segundo está totalmente ebrio.

El papel todo lo soporta y en toda obra se puede encontrar una u otra simbología. Para mí el gato negro que tanto atormenta al protagonista, no es otra cosa que la idea del mal, que constantemente se encuentra en tránsito del subconsciente al consciente y que o bien se tiene una gran fortaleza de voluntad o acaba obligándonos a hacer cosas que pueden ser terribles.
