In 1829 the Spanish slave ship, Midas, left Mendiland (modern-day Sierra Leone) headed for the Americas. During the Atlantic crossing, the slaves revolted, taking control of the ship. Midas became a pirate vessel, attacking Spanish slavers and merchants alike.
