The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes is the final set of twelve (out of a total of fifty-six) Sherlock Holmes short stories by Arthur Conan Doyle first published in the Strand Magazine between October 1921 and April 1927. The first British edition and the first American edition of the collection were both published in June 1927. However, they had slightly different titles.

The Sign of the Four (1890), also called The Sign of Four, is the second novel featuring Sherlock Holmes written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The Sign of the Four has a complex plot involving service in India, the Indian Rebellion of 1857, a stolen treasure, and a secret pact among four convicts ("the Four" of the title) and two corrupt prison guards. Dies ist der Beginn einer mysteriösen Todesserie mit allerlei Verwirrungen...

Nachdem Bruder Gabriel das Amnesi Quencher in die Pflanzen der Transmitis Nocturna injiziert hat und es über Nacht gründlich einwirken konnte, machen sich Sherlock Holmes und Dr. Watson auf den Weg in den Epping Forest, um Dr. Blackwood die zugesagten Pflanzenproben zu überreichen. Dabei gehen sie davon aus, dass Blackwood das Amnesi Quencher für die Solara Elixiris hält und es unwissentlich an die Schattenmänner weitergeben wird. Doch bei der Übergabe nimmt ihr Plan eine Wendung, die alles verändert – eine Wendung, mit der sie nicht gerechnet haben...

Sherlock Holmes und Dr. Watson kamen in ihren Fall um das gestohlene Grabtuch und den Mord, der sich zwischenzeitlich ereignet hatte, keinen Schritt weiter. Daher beschlossen sie, ihren Pastor zu beschatten. Ein weiterer Verdächtiger tat sich auf. Und dann hatten Holmes und Watson ganz plötzlich ein Geständnis. Doch war das wirklich schon des Rätsels Lösung?

Sherlock Holmes und Dr. Watson erfuhren eine unfassbare Geschichte. Und diese sollte noch nicht die Letzte gewesen sein. Denn während ihr Verdächtiger sich bereits hinter Gittern befand, konnte Holmes der Angelegenheit noch nicht vollends Glauben schenken. Durch Zufall brachte ihn Watson auf einen neuen Gedanken. Holmes beschloss sofort zu handeln. Und auf wen die Beiden zu guter Letzt stießen, übertraf sämtliche Vorstellungen. Doch eine Frage blieb immer noch offen: Wo war das Grabtuch?

In Turin angekommen, bezogen Sherlock Holmes und Dr. Watson zuerst ihre Unterkunft und machten sich anschließend sofort auf den Weg, um mit Kardinal Fassati zu sprechen. Es stellte sich heraus, dass nur drei Leute einen Schlüssel zur Grabtuchkapelle besaßen. Der Kardinal selbst und zwei seiner engsten Vertrauten, der ältere Pastor Spina und ein jüngerer Pastor namens Milani. Als Watson abends noch zu einer Gassirunde mit seinem Hund aufbrach, machte er im Park eine Entdeckung. 13 Männer hatten sich um eine Tafel versammelt und speisten. Einer davon trug das Turiner Grabtuch.
