يتلقى مؤلفو مختارات "كتاب الذعر الرهيب" دعوة للاحتفال بأحد الأعياد المقدسة، في منزل فخم بمقاطعة ليك، فيتجه فريق التحقيق شمالاً، للاجتماع بالمؤلفين، ظنًا منهم أن تكتلهم سيبقيهم بأمان.

دودي تلتقي رئيس تحرير دار نشر "ميستوفيليس وشركاه" الذي يبدو خائفًا من بعض القوى الخفية. كما تتعرف على المحرر الغامض فوكس سومز، قبل أن يشهدوا خدعًا غريبة على أرضية الاستديو الذي يؤدي فيه تيموثي عرضه التليفزيوني المباشر.

فريق التحقيق الجريء، يشقون طريقهم إلى برج سكني كئيب، تعيش فيه صاحبة الاسم التالي في فهرس المختارات الأدبية "كتاب الذعر الرهيب".. تٌدعى ساندرا تمبلتون، ويكتشفون أنها أُمّ عزباء، وبينما تشعر المؤلفة بالقلق من الزيارة، يتحمس أصدقاؤها وأفراد أسرتها للقاء النجم التلفزيوني تيموثي بولد.

الثلوج لا تزال تتساقط على قصر سومز من الخارج، بينما المؤلفون في الداخل يتطلع بعضهم إلى بعض في حذر وشك، حتى إنهم لاحظوا أن طاقم الخدم لا يبدون طبيعيين.

دودي غولايتلي امرأة قاتلة. القتل مهنتها. تكتب قصصًا وتصنع شخصياتها من أجل تعريضهم لأحداث مروعة.

بعد كثير من الاكتشافات والاحتفالات الصاخبة، تعود دودي إلى منزلها القديم بصحبة كاسندرا، وتغرق في ذكريات الماضي داخل هذا المنزل الفارغ.

جريمة قتل متعمدة تقع في أبراج سومز، مشفوعة بالكثير من الفوضى، وتسيطر على الأجواء، وتنذر المؤلفين بالخطر، بينما يبدو فوكس سومز وزوجته أمام الجميع كأنهما من مجانين العصور الغابرة؛ ويبدو أن الوقت قد حان لدودي وكاسندرا وتيموثي لكي يواجهوا الشياطين ذاتها، وإيقافها عند حدها.

تجد دودي نفسها، مع صديقيها، مطالبة بالذهاب في رحلة إلى منطقة يوركشاير، وسط ثلوج الشتاء. هناك يلتقون مؤلفة قصص بوهيمية، تسخر من أنهم يسعون وراء قصص خيالية تتحقق على أرض الواقع، عندما يستعلمون منها عن قصة في مخطوطة كتاب المختارات، عن فراشة عملاقة تتغذى على الدماء. ثم يواجهون في الريف المغطى بالثلوج بعض الأشياء الشنيعة التي تختبر عزيمتهم.. يواجهون شخصًا ما، أو شيئًا ما، يعتبرونه مصدر الشرور.

تصل الأحداث إلى ذروتها في قصر سومز الغابر، ويشعر كل من دودي وكاسندرا وتيموثي بأنهم أبعد عن الواقع من أي وقت مضى.

في طريقهم إلى إدنبره، لمواصلة التحقيق، تحاول كاسندرا، المساعِدة الخاصة بدودي، أن تتعافى من سر مدمر غيّر حياتها.

Но главная задача Доди и Кассандры – успеть к одному из авторов детективной антологии, пока того не постигла участь его же персонажа.
