Due to a combination of bravery, luck and some of Chipper's more useful modifications, they've managed to evade their pursuers so far. But The Institute is closing in, and Chipper and Jeff will have to be stay one step ahead if they want to stay alive....

Et son karma ne va pas s'améliorer : Trixie, sa charmante voisine, comptable le jour, dominatrice la nuit, a besoin d'aide pour empêcher le reporter Martin Benson de dévoiler la nature illégale de sa "profession". Zack, plus chevaleresque que jamais, est prêt à tout pour rendre service à son amie ; quitte à rogner sur la déontologie pour aller menacer son confrère...

Entre suspense effréné et humour décapant, un des tous premiers thrillers du créateur de frissons. Une série d'ores et déjà culte sur les drôles d'aventures de Zack Walker, le plus attachant des antihéros. Son épouse et ses ados respirent, Zack Walker a trouvé un job. Lui, l'angoissé chronique, l'obsédé de la sécurité, a renoncé à son rôle d'homme au foyer/écrivain de science-fiction pour entrer à la rédaction du journal local.

Paul, professeur d'université, n'est plus que l'ombre de lui-même après avoir été témoin d'une scène macabre, huit mois plus tôt. Atteint de stress post-traumatique, il ne parvient pas à renouer avec une vie normale. Pour l'y aider, sa femme l'encourage à coucher sur le papier les pensées qui le rongent et lui offre une machine à écrire. Mais bientôt, ce sont d'étranges bruits qui hantent les nuits de Paul, et qu'il semble seul à entendre : le clac-clac répétitif de la machine qui tape seule et lui livre, au matin, des messages inquiétants...

Aux États-Unis, de nos jours. Zack Walker a une obsession : la sécurité. Marié et père de deux enfants, cet auteur de science-fiction a préféré quitter un environnement urbain qu'il estime trop dangereux, pour une vie de banlieue bien paisible. Paisible ? A voir. Car Zack, en bon parano, continue de voir le danger partout : ses ados s'obstinent à laisser la porte d'entrée ouverte aux cambrioleurs potentiels et surtout, sa femme Sara laisse son sac à main à disposition de tous.
