His classic short story ‘In the Penal Colony’ begins with the innocuous words “It’s a peculiar apparatus,” as the Officer explains to the Traveller, what this grisly machine will do to the prisoners who serve their time here.

Die Situation eskaliert, als Gregor von seinem Vater lebensbedrohlich verletzt wird. Gregors Verwandlung ist ein stiller Aufschrei gegen Ohnmacht und Unmenschlichkeit in der modernen Welt.

"Die Verwandlung" gehört zu den wenigen Werken, die noch zu Kafkas Lebzeiten veröffentlicht wurden. Sie entstand im November/Dezember 1912 in drei Teilen. Ursprünglich nur eine kleine Idee, für die Kafka die Arbeit am Roman "Der Verschollene" (Amerika) unterbrach, wuchs sie sich schnell zu einer recht umfangreichen Novelle aus.
