Widmerpools selbstbezogener Führungsstil sorgt für Spannungen im Regiment, sodass Nick mit Hochdruck an einer Veränderung seiner Situation arbeitet. Zunehmend steigt auch die Sorge um Freunde und Familienmitglieder, die in London unmittelbar vom Krieg bedroht sind.

1940 - der Zweite Weltkrieg ist ausgebrochen. Der Kriegsbeginn ist ein Einschnitt im Leben von Nicholas Jenkins und seinen Freunden. Als zweiter Leutnant tritt er einem Regiment in Wales bei, geführt von einem übereifrigen Kommandanten. Der Alltag als Soldat auf heimatlichem Boden schwankt zwischen absurden Manövern und quälender Langeweile, und so verbringen Nick und seine Kameraden die meiste Zeit mit Warten und mit dem Gedanken an Frauen.

Im sechsten Band rückt die Zeit der Dinnerpartys und ausschweifenden Empfänge in den Hintergrund. Die Bedrohung durch den nahenden Zweiten Weltkrieg wird immer stärker. Der Erzähler Nicholas Jenkins fühlt sich zurückversetzt in seine Kindheit, die vom Ersten Weltkrieg geprägt war und verliert sich in Erinnerungen. Dennoch sind Nick und seine Freunde weiterhin unbeirrt auf der Suche nach Vergnügen und Zerstreuung - das gesellschaftliche Leben kommt nicht zum Erliegen.
