Der Außenseiter (engl. Originaltitel The Outsider) ist eine Horrorkurzgeschichte von H. P. Lovecraft, die zwischen März und August 1921 geschrieben wurde. Sie wurde erstmals im Magazin Weird Tales im April 1926 veröffentlicht. Die Kurzgeschichte diente als Grundlage des Horrorfilms Castle Freak (1995) und der Neuverfilmung aus dem Jahr 2020. The story revolves around a young man who becomes obsessed with an abandoned crypt. Originally built to house the members of a powerful local family, the crypt was abandoned after a fire consumed the family’s home and compelled them to move away. Despite living in the local area and having an entirely different surname, the narrator of the story claims some spurious relation to the powerful family. With this obsession ingrained he starts to spend his nights loitering outside the crypt and dreaming up ways of gaining access.

Between 1903 and 1908, Lovecraft created many stories and sketches, about which we know nothing today beyond the fact that they existed. Almost all met the same fate: death in the flames at the hands of their creator. Lovecraft saved only two texts – "The Alchemist" (1908) and "The Beast in the Cave." The plot can be summarized in one sentence: a tourist gets lost in a vast cave, where he encounters the titular beast.

The story traces the history of the titular street in a New England city, presumably Boston, from its first beginnings as "but a path" in colonial times to a quasi-supernatural occurrence in the years immediately following World War I. As the city grows up around the street, it is planted with many trees and built along with "simple, beautiful houses of brick and wood", each with a rose garden. As the Industrial Revolution runs its course, the area degenerates into a run-down and polluted slum, with all of the street's old houses falling into disrepair.
