Anton Chekhov (1860-1904) is generally considered to be among the greatest writers of short stories in history. The Chorus Girl tells the tale of a mistress who is confronted unexpectedly by her lover's wife. In the meantime the cheating husband is hiding in the next room. The dialogue between the two women is classic of Chekhov's genius... he captures a person's entire character and soul within a few paragraphs and then catapults them into a crisis from which they emerge changed.

Anton Chekhov (1860-1904) wrote of the Russian period of depression and pessimism and is the acknowledged leader of the realistic school of the Russian short story. In The Encased Man he describes the life of a schoolmaster whose existence is limited by petty rules, morals, inhibitions and unconscious fears. Considered one of the greatest short story writers of all time, Anton Chekhov heavily influenced the evolution of the modern short story. Most notably, he used a technique that would later be called "stream-of-consciousness," in which he eschewed the traditional story structure and simply wrote as though he was thinking aloud. Written in that same vein, "The Death of a Government Clerk" is one of his best-known short stories about the fragile Ivan Dmitritch Tchervyakov who blows a small breach of etiquette far out of proportion.
