Eine verschwundene Tiara ruft den Meisterdetektiv auf den Plan, denn ausgerechnet bei einer kurzen Aufbewahrung in einem ungesicherten Schreibtisch wird das wertvolle Schmuckstück gestohlen. Die Zahl derer, die das Versteck der Tiara kannten, erscheint auf den ersten Blick durchaus überschaubar. Ein Motiv hat indes nur eine der Personen. Holmes zweifelt jedoch daran, dass die Lösung des Falles so einfach ist.

Sir Hubert Ardingley bittet den Meisterdetektiv um Hilfe, nachdem er von den plötzlichen Heiratsabsichten seines Onkels William erfahren hat, einem bis dato überzeugten Junggesellen. Sir Hubert kommt die zukünftige Mrs. Ardingley verdächtig vor, und er lädt Holmes und Watson nach Petersdown Towers ein, um die Braut in Augenschein zu nehmen.
